Binocular Vision
Assessments

Have you ever wondered that despite having two eyes, we still see everything as one? This is because of the muscles and nerves which collect information from both eyes, connect to the brain and form a single perception. This science is called Binocular Vision. In this blog, we shall outline Binocular Vision Assessments in detail including their causes and treatments, elaborate on how they are different from the regular comprehensive eye exams and tell you how BYNOCS can help people overcome their Binocular Vision problem.

WHAT IS BINOCULAR VISION ASSESSMENTS?

Also referred to as Binocular Vision Disorder, Binocular Vision Dysfunction occurs when an individual is unable to maintain focus on an object with both eyes for creating one single image, and the two separate images from the respective eyes do not merge into one image in the brain. Binocular Vision Assessments are vision-evaluation tests for diagnosing and treating Binocular Vision Dysfunction, performed by optometrists who are trained in treating binocular vision problems. Going beyond the scope of regular primary eyecare, Binocular Vision Assessment carefully evaluates the conditions of eye focussing, eye tracking, eye teaming, visual processing speed and visual perception.

CAUSES OF BINOCULAR VISION DYSFUNCTION

Do you experience headaches or migraines? Or suffer from dizziness, anxiety, panic attacks or vertigo? Chances are, you could be suffering from BVD or Binocular Vision Dysfunction, which is basically a misalignment of the eyes. As the brain relies on both eyes to create a single image, any slight misalignment can cause dizziness, nausea and vertigo-like symptoms.

Binocular Vision Dysfunction can occur due to many factors, such as

  • Brain Injury
  • Congenital Deficiencies
  • Eye Nerves Damage
  • Diabetes
  • Myasthenia Gravis, which affects communication between nerves and muscles of the body
  • Crossed Eyes, where the eye muscles have trouble working together.

HOW TO SOLVE BINOCULAR VISION DYSFUNCTION

A carefully monitored vision therapy program can help in eliminating the symptoms and signs of Binocular Vision Dysfunction by improving and developing the patient’s binocular vision skills. This program involves the deployment of multiple repetitive exercises for strengthening the eyes and increasing their effectiveness. Along with in-clinic sessions with certified Vision Therapists, the program also involves giving patients eye exercises as “homework”.

BINOCULAR VISION ASSESSMENT VS COMPREHENSIVE EYE EXAM

As part of regular preventive health care, periodic vision and eye examinations are part of what we call Comprehensive Eye Exam. This exam includes tests and exercises such as Visual Acuity, Keratometry, Refraction, Eye Focussing, Teaming and Movement Testing, Tonometry for measuring eye pressure and Supplemental Testing for a more detailed assessment. Comprehensive Eye Exams play an important role in diagnosing and treating eye conditions such as Myopia or near-sightedness, Hyperopia or far-sightedness, Presbyopia, astigmatism and ocular diseases.

On the other hand, Binocular Vision Assessment involves a series of treatments for successfully resolving the eye condition called BVD or Binocular Vision Dysfunction. As against a Comprehensive Eye Exam, Binocular Vision Assessment involves conducting various eye tests to determine the efficacy of how the eyes focus and work together as a team.

HOW BYNOCS CAN HELP INDIVIDUALS WITH BINOCULAR VISION PROBLEM

Being a cloud based software for Binocular Vision Assessment and therapy, BYNOCS helps in assisting Ophthalmologists and Optometrists with accurately diagnosing Binocular Vision problems and offering their patients a range of software based exercises which serve as therapy for successfully treating their Binocular Vision Dysfunction and helping them see better.
