Aniseikonia

What is Aniseikonia?


Aniseikonia is a condition that results from an excessive difference in the spectacle power between the eyes. The images seen by the two eyes are perceived as a different size or shape and can manifest with symptoms of headache, dizziness, disorientation, and excessive eye strain.


Causes:

  • Anisometropia – A difference in the refractive prescription between the eyes
  • Cataract Surgery – Symptoms of aniseikonia can occur following cataract surgery. This frequently occurs if the surgery is performed on one eye only.
  • Retinal Conditions – Any condition that causes distortion of the retina can result in aniseikonia. Some possible causes include:
    • Macular Pucker
    • Epiretinal Membrane
    • Retinal Detachment Repairs
    • Macular Edema
    • Macular Degeneration
