Heterophoria

What is Heterophoria?


Perfect alignment of two eyes (straight eyes) in all position of gazes at all distance is called as orthophoria. Heterophoria or latent squint is a condition in which eyes are not in the straight position. An eye deviating inwards is known as esophoria and deviating outwards is known as exophoria. Vertically eye deviating upwards is known as hyperphoria and downwards is known as hypophoria.


Symptoms of Heterophoria:

Headache, eyestrain, difficult change focus from near to distant, blurring of vision, diplopia and difficulty to judge distance and position

  • Cover – Uncover test
  • Alternate test
  • Maddox rod test
  • Maddox wing test
  • Near point of convergence and accommodation
