Dichoptic therapy for Amblyopia or lazy eye

What is amblyopia?

Amblyopia, commonly known as ‘Lazy Eye,’ is a serious condition that refers to reduced vision in one eye. Simply put, it is when one eye doesn’t coordinate with the other the way it should. Amblyopia is mainly caused due to the following reasons:

  1. Significant refractive errors, such as myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism.
  2. Strabismus or crossed eyes.
  3. Structural abnormalities, such as opacity on the cornea or crystalline lens.

 

The symptoms of amblyopia are generally one wandering eye. But the symptoms may not always be obvious. Therefore, early detection of amblyopia is crucial for its successful treatment. 

What is dichoptic therapy?

Dichoptic training is a relatively new but promising therapeutic approach to amblyopia. Since amblyopia is associated with the visual cortical function (neuroplasticity), it becomes crucial to involve binocular training in its treatment. Therefore, the idea behind dichoptic therapy is binocular balancing, in which the patient has to look at contrast-adjusted images to force the brain to use the amblyopic eye more and improve its coordination.

How does dichoptic therapy work for amblyopia treatment?

The technique employs video games that aim for simultaneous and separate stimulation of both eyes. These games consist of an immersive and engaging environment in which contrasting images are presented to different eyes suitable to them. The eyes work together to gain control of the image contrast presented to them on the split screen view. This binocular training ultimately enhances visual crowding, light sensitivity, and visual attention.
